Risk of Overdose from amps being sold as morphine

Nalbuphine (trademark names – Nubain, Kinz) is being sold in Hull as 20mg morphine glass amps for injection.

Nalbuphine is a mixed agonist-antagonist analgesic which was withdrawn from UK use in 2003. The amps in circulation have red Arabic writing on them suggesting they have been imported from the Middle East.

Risks of use:

  • The amps are likely to block effects of other drugs, including methadone – resulting in withdrawals.
  • People who are opiate naïve have a high risk of overdose.
  • A range of side effects including; hallucinations, out of body experience, dizziness, severe weakness and feeling like you might pass out.

Strong heroin is in circulation in Hull

Heroin has been very low in purity, but we are now getting reports that it has become stronger – which means greater risk of overdose for users.

In the last week there have been 2 deaths which look to be caused by heroin overdose (although cause of death has not been signed off by the Coroner at this stage).

See notes above on how to reduce the risk of overdose
