Finishing at 12:30 with a buffet lunch

Where is it being held?

Who can come?

Anyone

The Event is intended to help people from Minority Communities, but it will be helpful to anyone concerned about abuse of drugs or alcohol.  Community leaders are especially welcome.

This Event is being held during half-term, so that children can attend.  Anyone under 16 is welcome to come, but they must have their parents’ or guardians’ permission and must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or over.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge to come - the Event is free

What will I get from coming?

The Event has three main aims:

  • To increase your awareness of drug and alcohol issues and the services available to them
  • To tell you about the services available to you, and your families and friends, to help you deal with the problems of drug and alcohol abuse
  • To help you to be able to raise awareness within your own community of both the problems and the services available

Also, your feedback to all the drug and alcohol professionals that will there will help us understand any special needs of minority ethnic groups for drug and alcohol related services

Who will be there?

There will be lots of people from many different cultures and communities across the city.  In addition, there will be representatives from lots of the community groups, helping with the organisation.

There will also be drug and alcohol professionals from most of the services that help people with their problems.  They will be available to answer your questions.

What is going to happen?

When you arrive, we will ask you to register, so that we can see which groups have been represented at the meeting.  We may give you a coloured badge, so that you can see quickly who are the organisers and professionals.

There will be a short presentation lasting no more than 30 minutes.  This will talk about some of the problems with drugs and alcohol and explain how the different drug and alcohol services operate.

After that we will start a more open forum.  We will ask everyone to split up into a number of groups, sitting around in circles.  There will be professionals in each group and community representatives.  This will be a very informal way for you to ask questions and discuss any problems and concerns that you may have in a friendly group.  The drug and alcohol professionals will be there to help you.

If we get enough young people attending, then we will have at least one group just for them.

After the forum session, we will provide a buffet lunch at about 12:30.  The food will be mainly vegetarian.  You may leave at any time after the forum session finishes.

Will there be any more Events like this?

This is the first time such an Event has been held, so we will wait to see how well it works before planning a second one.  However, we do believe that a lot of people are interested in more detailed training.  We are going to develop a one day course for people from minority communities and we hope to be able to announce details at the Event.
